How to use coconut oil for hair conditioner:

The best way to apply coconut oil to your hair is immediately after a shower or bath, when the hair is still wet. It should not still be dripping wet, but more than slightly damp.

It doesn't matter whether the coconut oil is liquid or solid (pure coconut oil solidifies at less than 76 degrees F, but it's still perfectly good).

Take a small amount (about a half teaspoon for long hair, less for shorter hair) and put it in your palm. Rub your hands together and begin the application at the ends of your wet hair, using your oily fingers to distribute it evenly and lightly.

The trick is to use just enough so that the oil will penetrate the hair, without leaving an oily or greasy look. Use more at the ends, less in the middle and very little, if any at the roots.

Don’t use any oil near the roots if you want to avoid the greasy look.

Although the molecular structure of coconut oil is perfect for penetrating inside the hair shaft, and works beautifully with the natural hair proteins, its still easy to go overboard with the application, and end up with oily hair.

If you’ve applied enough to make the hair look oily, the only way to remove it is to re-wash the hair.

Coconut oil is also a great treatment for dandruff.

Whether the flakes are caused by dry scalp, or a fungal/yeast condition like seborrheic dermatitis, coconut oil will help, because it's a great moisturizer, and it's anti-fungal. Again, do scalp treatments when you don't have to go out in public, try overnight treatments (protect your pillow with a plastic bag covered with an old towel).
The first time you try coconut oil for hair conditioning, pick a day when you can hang out at home.

It can take a bit of experimentation until you find the right dose for your particular hair, and the important thing is to be able to leave the oil in your hair once you have applied it.

Coconut oil has been used in India and other parts of Asia as a hair treatment for many years. Used as a hair treatment and a conditioner, coconut oil is known to add bounce and shine to dry and damaged hair. When combined with other essential oils, coconut oil makes an excellent dandruff treatment. Recent research shows that coconut oil has the ability to penetrate the hair shaft and reduce protein loss as compared to other oils such as sunflower oils or mineral oils. Making a hair treatment out of a good quality coconut oil is fun and easy to do. Here is how.

How to Make a Coconut Oil Hair

Step 1

Buy a good quality coconut oil from a health food store. Use a virgin coconut oil that is made from fresh coconut meat rather than a refined coconut oil that has been stripped off its beneficial nutrients.

Step 2

Brush hair thoroughly and comb out all the tangles.

Step 3

Scoop out some coconut oil into a cup. Put the cup in a pot with warm water to melt the oil gently. Even though coconut oil stays a liquid in tropical climates, it solidifies at room temperature in most of North America. Coconut oil melts at around 76 degree centigrade.

Step 4

Add essential oils to enhance the coconut oil treatment. A couple of drops of rosemary, neem, tea tree, or cedarwood essential oil added to the treatment will help fight dandruff and encourage hair growth. A few drops of lavender and geranium essential oils added to the coconut oil will nourish dry hair and also have an added bonus of being a soothing and stress relieving treatment.

Step 5

Pour some of the warm oil into hands and massage scalp for a few minutes. Coat hair thoroughly with the rest of the coconut oil in the cup.

Step 6

Put on a shower cap, or just use some saran wrap to cover hair. Leave the hair treatment on overnight for very dry hair. For oily or normal hair, leave the treatment on for two hours.

Step 7

Wash out hair with a gentle shampoo. Hair may have to shampooed out twice to get all the oil out. Skip using a post shampoo conditioner.

1. Brush your hair regularly before going to bed each night.

2. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Use very little but enough to cover hair completely with lather.

3. Avoid brushing wet hair. This will cause the hair to stretch and finally break.

4. Take a calcium supplement or drink two glasses of milk a day.

5. Always hold hair dryer away from your hair.

6. Avoid pulling back your hair tightly.

7. Never use a rubber band on your hair as it can pull and damage hair considerably.

8. Never wash your hair with very hot or very cold water.
